Archon: The Light and the Dark Electronic Arts (Free Fall)1986The DRM used for this game is specific to the Mac Plus. The programmer knew that it would leave the game unplayable on any other hardware and protested but EA insisted. A unprotected version was made and packed away. It was leaked to a warez site many, many years later. But, the game also uses page-flipping hardware specific to the Mac plus. Apple decided to remove this under used feature from future models, so even the leaked DRM-free version will only run on a Mac Plus (and very few emulators). Electronic Arts vigilantly continues to this day to ensure that Archon for Mac Plus only remains playable for the very few people who bought it for their Mac Plus and the very, very small subset of those who kept their Mac Plus in use to this day. EA of course, no longer sells Archon for Mac. labelimageminimize

Uninvited Mindscape (Icom Simulations)1986Updates to system software are included on one of the game disks and will run the updates if the game does not find them running or installed on the computer. Thus it can be presumed that running the game on earlier systems (Mac OS 1 & 2) is not supported by the publisher (even if possible).***

Breach Omnitrend Software1987WE WANT YOU...

FOR THE FEDERATED WORLD’S SPECIAL FORCES

Moving my squad through enemy infested jungle. Suddenly Darrow’s detector picks up life forms 50 metres out.

"Nothing but a couple of BRACHIATORS" he says to me.

Just then Darrow takes it through the chest. We all hit the dirt trying to figure where the shot came from. And there it is... a BATTLE ROBOT. Hsiang shoots its sensory grid but it doesn’t do much good. It starts tracking him with its dual guns and suddenly he takes some hot plasma. Now it’s just me and the Kid Roki.

"Roki" I said, "Direct fire at its lifters so it can’t move." So like a vet of 20 drops he rises on one knee and hits the thing right in the lifters.

"That’s one less Battle Robot", he says.

I toss an energy grenade at the hulk to make sure. Then we turned to start the long job of carrying the boys north to our landing craft.

Defender of the Crown Cinemaware (Master Designer Software)1987Cinemaware says "512k", "Not compatible with Mac II", "800k Drive", "Hard disk installable"

This entry is tagged "macos3" (System 3.0) for minimum compatibility due to the 800k drive requirement in 1987. I'm pretty sure Apple never intended 800k drives for System versions 1 or 2 and even attempting this would require pointlessly downgrading a Mac to an older system software. (safe to say macos1 and macos2 are not supported, even if possible)

Defender of the Crown crashes before loading on Mac OS 8 or later. Cinemaware never provided a patch or workaround.

Defender of the Crown can be run using the OS Classic emulator, if properly configured.

In this non-stop interactive text adventure, you are John Rambo, returning to Vietnam in search of American P.O.W.s. Shadowgate Mindscape (Icom Simulations)1987The original version would not run in color Macs. A later (1992?) version is still black & white but runs fine on color Macs. Despite naming three Mac models in the requirements that use a 68000 CPU, the manual lists a 68020 CPU as the minimum supported. It does not mention Macintosh II, Macintosh LC (the only Mac to use an 020). It does mention the Performa 200 (68030) and Powerbook (68HC000) models on some packaging.***

4th & Inches Accolade1988Welcome to the pros, rookie.

So you were an All-American? Big deal! This is pro football, baby. It's time to put down your press clippings and start buttin' heads with the big boys.

4th & Inches gives you all of the hard-hitting action of real football: the bombs, the blitzing, the goal line stands. You'll experience graphics and animation that are as riveting as a blind site hit.

As the key player on defense, you've got to have speed, stamina and smarts. As the quarterback, you've got to read an unforgiving defense that takes no prisoners. Winning at 4th & Inches will take all the moves of a #1 draft choice plus the tactical genius of a veteran head coach.

Remember, this is the big time, hotshot. This is real football. This is 4th & Inches.*Time to put on the choach's headset. Each player in 4th & Inches has their own individual playing characteristics, so you'd better analyze your opponent's strengths and weaknesses before you name your starters. Your rival is starting a superquick defensive backfield. Your first string QB is a scrambler, but his back-up has a rocket for an arm. You start the back-up. Hey, egos may get bruised but this ain't no popularity contest. Your're out to win.

4th & Inches gives you a playbook that any pro coach would envy. Go to the huddle. You've got 20 plays and 11 different formations at your command. Call the play and bring your team up to the line. The defensive grunts glare at you from behind steel cages. They're in a nickel defense ... but wait! Out of the corner of your eye you see the comerback showing blitz! Your arms got you this far-- now it's going to make you the hero or the goat.

The ball slaps the palm of your hand as you drop for the fake draw. The fullback leaps over the top on the fake, but the safety isn't biting. He's on your receive like a cheap suit. You sense the pressure from your blind side. Scramble. Scan the field. The halfback is wide open! You fell your knees buckling as linemen dice at your feet. Throw! Yes....touchdown!****

[52]***The first chapter in The Forgotten Realms Epic. Play Ruins of Adventure, a Forgotten Realms AD&D game module based on this game.

A few defiant humans are trying to reclaim the war torn city of Phlan from bands of monsters. They plan to build a new city on the ruins of the old. It seems as though the monsters are organized under someone's command to prevent the rebuilding. The player commands a group of hired adventures to clear monsters from the city, from the city's surrounding defenses, and to investigate the source of the attacks.

The Mac version was designed to operate on monochrome Macs as well as color Macs. 16 color display required 2 Mb and/or a Mac II. The game is fully integrated into the GUI with all the screen elements appearing as separate windows and dialogs rather than being tiled and multiple screens as in all other versions of the game. Game options are all available in the Mac menus and have keyboard shortcuts. This allows more space for certain elements, for instance the text area is approximately 80 columns by 9 rows. The text ares is much larger than in other versions but few dialogs actually use more than 3 lines of it. Also, the 1st person view and some other elements are the same size as the other versions. The Mac version has sound but lacks the music that all other versions have.

Requirements:
Macintosh Plus, SE, or Macintosh II
1 Mb RAM (2 Mb for 16 color on Mac II)
Hard drive OR two floppy drives

The Apple and Commodore versions were simultaneously developed according to the article "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" by Croftward in "G.M. the Independent Fantasy Roleplaying Magazine", September 1988. Other versions originate from ports of one of these.

Also sold in:

Dragon's Lair ReadySoft (Sullivan Bluth Interactive Media)1990Long ago, in a magical time, a good King named Aethelred ruled a peaceful kingdom. Now his kingdom had many treasures, but its greatest prize was Princess Daphne, the King's only child. Brave Knights and handsome Princes came from afar just to pay her court, for she was a maiden of exceeding beauty and grace. But, though they laid vast riches at her feet and pleaded most earnestly for her hand, Princess Daphne refused them all. For her heart had long been given to another... Dirk the Daring, the King's champion and bravest Knight.

Then one dark day, Singe, an evil dragon who ruled over a shadowed land, appeared in Aethelred's kingdom and demanded that the king deliver up his kingdom and people to him. When Aethelred refused Singe's vile demand, the monster kidnapped the beautiful Daphne and imprisoned her in a crystal sphere in the horrible dungeons beneath his enchanted castle. Singe then sent Aethelred this message:

Relinquish your kingdom before the setting sun or your beloved daughter will perish. Aethelred and all the people of the kingdom were plunged into despair. All except for Dirk who vowed to go to the
enchanted castle and free the Princess ... if he could survive the dungeon's many perils ... if he could reach the Dragon's lair.
